Unique Nano Materials

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)  are a novel graphitic material consisting of graphene sheet(s) formed in a cylindrical fashion into a unique tubular structure. The diameters of these tubes range from approximately 1 to a few hundreds of nanometers.  The length of these tubular fibers also varies from a few to a few thousands of micrometers, therefore, the resultant aspect ratio (length over diameter) ranges from 1,000 to 1,000,000.  The huge aspect ratio along with their unique structure arrangement differentiate CNTs from many other materials. CNTs have been shown to possess many extraordinary properties such as strength 16X that of stainless steel and with a thermal conductivity five times that of copper. Because of the natural powder form of CNTs, they are probably best suited as additives for building new classes of composite materials. Incorporated into a polymer, ceramic or metal matrix, CNTs will boost the host material’s physical properties (like electrical and thermal conductivity and physical properties) well above the performance achievable over the traditional fillers such as carbon black, carbon fiber or glass fiber.

CNTs are also divided into single-wall, double-wall and multiple-wall CNTs. The main difference is the number of the graphene layers in the structures. Some of the extraordinary CNT properties are quantified below:

1. resistance: 10 -4 Ω-cm

2. ampere density: 107 amps/cm2

3.termal conductivity: 3,000 W/mK

4. strength of extention: 30 GPa

Dispersion for Performance


Although carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have inherently outstanding physical properties, incorporating them into other material matrixes can be a challenge due to its agglomerate form and surface chemistry of carbon. In order to fully utilize the properties of the individual nanotubes, these materials are needed to be evenly dispersed into the desired matrixes.  General methods for dispersing nanotubes include both physical and chemical methods.  Shear mixing, milling, and cavitation, etc. have been proved to work effectively to disperse nanotubes into liquid or liquefied substance.  Utilization of surfactant or functionalization can also improve interaction between nanotubes and dispersant so as to achieve maximum dispersion performance.

Safety is first


The potential health risk of any substance is generally associated with the magnitude and duration of exposure, the persistence of the material in a body, the inherent toxicity of the material, and the susceptibility or health status of a person. Since nanotechnology is an emerging field, there are many uncertainties as to whether the unique properties associated with these engineered nanomaterials also pose unique occupational health risks. We, at Cnano, strike hard to ensure the safety of handling the carbon nanotubes.  We aggressively enforce the adoption of many engineering control at our work place to isolate areas where a possible spill might happen. Our staffs are regularly trained and fully equipped with appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) when handling any nanomaterials.

Please follow recommendation on MSDS closely on appropriate selection of appropriate PPE and emergency response to deal with CNT powders.
